Last year I wrote a pretty popular post (Kill Cupid?) on acceptable gifts and activities for those that are anti-Valentine's Day. I believe that real holidays are those that come with days off work so to me, V-Day doesn't really count. However, I do respect everyone's right to celebrate as they wish, as long as they aren't blatantly shoving it down everyone else's throats.
This year, I'd like to talk about the absolute worst Valentine ideas. I'd love it if you would post your own ideas so we can compile a list of things for people to avoid - you'll be doing a public service for those clueless romantics out there =)
1) Marriage Proposals - as if getting engaged wasn't stressful enough, you've decided to combine it with the most stressful romantic holiday of the year. If things don't work out as planned, you'll turn into one of those severely bitter Valentine haters. If things do work out, you'll be faced with a lifetime of stress trying to figure out how to top yourself every year.
2) The restaurant buy-out - sure you get the whole place to yourself but unless you've got cash to burn, it's just not worth the cost. I'd be more impressed by a gourmet homemade dinner than a private one in a fancy restaurant. Don't forget that because no one else is around, all the staff will have their eyes on the two of you!
3) Sky writing - Expensive and impractical, especially in a city like Vancouver that is known for it's temperamental weather. Then there's the added worry of whether or not your intended person sees the message and understands it's from you. I foresee a lot of collateral damage for other couples depending on the message.
Here are a few specific shopping tips for you guys reading:
- If you are buying anything edible for your Valentine, do not even entertain the thought of buying anything low-calorie or fat-free (unless her dietary needs are actually that specific).
- If you are buying her something to wear, make sure it is her ACTUAL size because Lord help you if it's too big.
- NEVER EVER buy her a gym membership or pay for a personal trainer. I don't care if it's something she actually does want, it's just not something you should be giving on the 14th of February.
