The Reveal

A while back, I wrote about a curve ball that came out of left field and knocked me on my ass.  For a variety of reasons, I haven't been able to talk about it openly until now.  The company I work for is getting re-structured which means I'm losing my full time position and going back to being a part time contractor.  Cue dramatic reveal music and shocked face!

One of the hardships of being new to the industry is trying to get yourself established.  It's been great working with The Finer Details as I've had opportunities to take on a more hand-on role which may not have happened at a larger company.  I've learned so much and feel ready for a new challenge.  I'm not feeling shocked or upset anymore - now I'm feeling excited (when I don't think about the bills that will pile up if I don't get hired!) and ready to jump into a new role.  First thing is first though...I need to get hired somewhere!  Sending out resumes and going on interviews isn't always the most pleasant experience so if anyone has any leads, feel free to send them my way =)

I guess the only thing left to say at this point is look out world, cause here I come again!

Dashing Dreams

It's been a few weeks but I blame a combination of work and Stanley Cup hockey.  Speak of, so much for the Canucks run for the cup...

After last year's amazing season, losing in Game 7 of the Cup Final, and the subsequent riot, it's not really a surprise to many that this season didn't even come close to matching the previous one.  As one friend put it - last year was like getting dumped by your boyfriend then coming home to find they shit the bed and trashed your house.  Why would you want to put yourself through it again?

As my family and friends can attest, I have not been as intense about hockey this season.  It's not because I love it any less, I just found that after the mental, emotional, and monetary investment of the previous season, I just didn't have as much to give this year which is kind of how the Canucks looked at times.

Are our dreams of parading the Stanley Cup through Downtown Vancouver dashed for this year?  Obviously.  Are those dreams gone forever?  Absolutely not.  There's nothing like a long summer to get everyone motivated to win it all next season.  Am I delusional?  Maybe...but that's what it means to be a fan =)

Shake it Out

As winter takes one last dying gasp by dumping another load of snow on the Vancouver suburbs, I'm reminded of the current song du jour, "Shake it Out" performed by Florence and the Machine.  The song has nothing to do with snow or Winter in general, it's more about moving on from the things in our past, which is a common theme as we come into Spring.  It's a bit of a roundabout thought process that you hopefully understand - otherwise we might run into a few problems over the course of the next several month!  It's another quick one this week but I figured you wouldn't really need me to explain this song or theme further since I thought it was pretty self explanatory.

But just in case, here's my tip for the week: Spring is about new beginnings so take a chance, make some new mistakes, and never stop learning about yourself and the world around you.  Let go of the things in your past that are holding you back because (as Florence sings),
"Regrets collect like old friends...
...Because it's always darkest before the dawn...
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off."

The Year Before Darkness

"This is it...after 29 it's just darkness."
~ Schmidt, New Girl ("The Story of the 50")

It's the inaugural post and what better way to start the new blog than by talking about myself?  In reality, the next 52+ posts will be all about me so it makes sense to just jump right in =)

A lot of people say that your 20's is the time to figure out your life and grow up.  What no one really tells you that it's really about making mistakes; trying out careers, moving around, trusting the wrong people, and figuring out exactly who you are.  Then supposedly, by the time you're in your 30's you will be an actual grown up.  I've still got a year before I hit that particular milestone, and even though I have figured out a few of those things that make you a 'grown up,' I still have a few things to check off before I get there - like planning an epic 30th birthday party and figuring out other ways to celebrate!

I hope that over the next year you'll have fun watching me stumble through the end of my turbulent twenties and make a graceful (fingers crossed!) entrance into the next chapter.  Like so many things in life, it won't always be pretty but it's sure to be entertaining =)
